How I Helped a Client Get Back Into Wine (Without Wrecking Their Stomach)

A few weeks ago, I got a message from a potential client. She had acid reflux and a sensitive stomach, and after years of struggling with wine that left her uncomfortable. She was tired of cocktails, too much alcohol, too much sugar, and was done with fortified wines, too hard on her system. She just wanted to enjoy a glass of wine again without paying for it later.
Her ask was simple: help her find wines she could actually drink. Wines that wouldn't trigger her reflux. Wines that felt special, And wines that fit her budget. Nothing over $15 a bottle.
I LOVE a challenge especially when researching wines! Say less, I told her I got you!
I came back with five bottles. All of them low-acid, reflux-friendly, and versatile. And every single one was under $10.
The Total Wine Purple Tag Hack
Before I get into the wines, let me share the secret that made this possible: Total Wine's purple tags.
If you know, you know. If you don't, listen up!
When you're walking through Total Wine, look for the purple price tags. Those are the wines on sale—and not just a little discount. We're talking $12 wines marked down to $5. $15 wines for $9. High-quality bottles at prices that make you do a double-take.
For this client, I made it my mission to find nothing but purple tags. Budget-friendly, low-acid, delicious wines that she could enjoy without worry.
Here's what I found.

1. Castillo Clavijo Rioja White, 2024 (Rioja, Spain) - ~$4.97
A white wine made from Tempranillo Blanco—a rare white grape mutation of the red Tempranillo grape. It's grown in Rioja, Spain, a warm-climate region known for producing smooth, approachable wines.
WHY IT WORKS FOR REFLUX:
Warm climate = lower acidity. Spain's Rioja region produces ripe grapes with smooth, balanced acidity—much gentler on the stomach than cool-climate whites.
Medium-bodied and crisp without being tart. It's refreshing, but it won't leave that sharp, acidic burn.
Versatile and food-friendly. You can sip it on its own or pair it with lighter meals without worrying about your stomach staging a revolt.
TASTING NOTES: Citrus fruits, stone fruit, fresh herbs, and a clean finish. It's bright and flavorful without being aggressive.
PAIRS WITH:
Grilled chicken
Seafood (shrimp, fish, ceviche)
Caesar salad
Tapas (Spanish small plates)
Sea salt chips and cheese boards

2. Pacific Peak Chardonnay (Ripon, California) - ~$4.97
A California Chardonnay from Ripon, a warm inland region in the Central Valley. This is classic California Chardonnay—buttery, oaked, and full-bodied.
WHY IT WORKS FOR REFLUX:
Very warm climate = very low acid. Ripon gets HOT. That means ripe grapes, rich flavors, and minimal acidity.
Oaked and creamy. The oak aging adds vanilla, butter, and toast notes, which smooth out any remaining acidity.
Full-bodied and rich. This isn't a light, crisp white wine. It's got weight and texture, which makes it feel more indulgent and easier on sensitive stomachs.
TASTING NOTES: Tropical fruit, stone fruit, vanilla, butter, and toast. It's smooth, creamy, and rich.
PAIRS WITH:
Bacon and eggs (buttery wine + rich breakfast = perfection)
Grilled chicken with cream sauce
Lobster, crab, or shrimp (especially with butter)
Roasted vegetables

3. San Telmo Red Blend (Mendoza, Argentina) - ~$5.97
A red blend from Mendoza, Argentina, the same region that produces world-class Malbec. San Telmo is a well-known Argentine wine brand that specializes in affordable, high-quality wines.
WHY IT WORKS FOR REFLUX:
Mendoza = warm, high-altitude region = low acid. Argentine reds are known for being fruit-forward, smooth, and easy-drinking.
Malbec-based blends are famously low-acid. Malbec is one of the best red grapes for people with reflux.
Full-bodied and velvety. Smooth tannins, ripe fruit, no harshness.
TASTING NOTES: Dark fruit (plum, blackberry, black cherry), hints of chocolate, smooth tannins, and a velvety finish.
PAIRS WITH:
Burgers
Grilled steak
Lasagna
Pasta with red sauce
BBQ

4. Hectare Merlot (Napa Valley, California) - ~$2.97
An American Merlot from Napa Valley, California. Napa Merlot is known for being soft, smooth, and approachable.
WHY IT WORKS FOR REFLUX:
Napa Valley = warm climate = low acid. Ripe grapes, full fruit flavors, and smooth tannins.
Merlot is one of the softest red grapes. It's gentle, easy-drinking, and doesn't have the sharp edges of high-acid reds.
Versatile and food-friendly. You can drink it with almost anything and it won't overpower your meal or your stomach.
TASTING NOTES: Plum, black cherry, chocolate, vanilla (from oak aging), and smooth, soft tannins.
PAIRS WITH:
Lasagna
Grilled meats
Pasta with marinara
Roasted chicken

5. San Telmo Chardonnay (Mendoza, Argentina) - ~$5.97
A Chardonnay from Mendoza, Argentina, by San Telmo, the same producer as the red blend. Unlike buttery California Chardonnays, Argentine Chardonnay tends to be fresher and fruitier,
WHY IT WORKS FOR REFLUX:
Mendoza = warm climate = low acid. Same region as your favorite Malbec—warm, sunny, and producing ripe, smooth wines.
Fresh and fruity without being tart. It's got tropical fruit flavors but without the sharp acidity of cool-climate whites.
Lighter than California Chardonnay but still smooth. If you want something less buttery but still low-acid, this is it.
TASTING NOTES: Tropical fruit, stone fruit, citrus, and a smooth, clean finish.
PAIRS WITH:
Grilled chicken
Seafood
Light pasta dishes
Salads
Cheese boards
TOTAL: ~$25 for 5 bottles
Budget: $15/bottle = $75 total
Came in under budget by $50!
What My Client Learned
After our wine tasting, here's what she told me:
"I didn't think I could enjoy wine again. I thought my options were limited to bland, boring wines or just giving up entirely. But these? These are GOOD. They're smooth, they're flavorful, and most importantly—they don't hurt! I'm about to be a wine girl swirling my red wine and vibing with my white!"
She also learned:
Low-acid doesn't mean low-quality. Warm-climate regions (Spain, California, Argentina) produce incredible wines that just happen to be gentle on your stomach.
You don't have to spend a lot. Total Wine's purple tags are a goldmine if you know where to look.
Wine can be part of your life again. You just need the right guidance.
